Dumbest Fucking Guy On The Planet.com Was Taken

Doug Feith has a website. The thought that he ever had any influence over U.S. policy still dismays me. I sincerely hope that he devotes the rest of his life to his blog.

Best Wishes

Blogger Steve Gilliard, one of the most consistently worthwhile reads on the internets, is seriously ill and facing open-heart surgery. His partner Jen is keeping The News Blog updated with help from an all-star line up of the best writers on the nets. I sincerely hope that he'll make a quick recovery and be back on his feet soon.

Life Imitates George Carlin, Part I of Many

Pentagon officials have moved rapidly to respond to reports of horrifying conditions at Walter Reed Army Medical Center: they've banned soldiers from talking to the press.

It's about the same as a joke George Carlin first told in a fake newscast bit many, many years ago (quoting from memory):
A guy shot five people on the downtown bus, then got a transfer and shot three more people on the crosstown bus. In response, authorities plan to eliminate the transfer system.

Jump and be damned

So to the surprise of pretty much no one, Joe Lieberman is talking ever more openly about abandoning the last pretense of loyalty to the Democratic Party and jumping over to the Republican side of the aisle. My own reaction to this is pretty simple: let him jump and be damned. It's a pity, of course, that so many leaders of the party were so blind to this entirely predictable outcome during the general election, but all that jumping parties will do for Lieberman will be to make him even more irrelevant than he already is.

The Dems stand an excellent chance of expanding their control of the Senate in 2008, with a large number of vulnerable Republican seats up for election, and the possibility of a wave of Republican retirements that would make the odds even better. And I can think of no more appropriate fate for Lieberman than to be an unwelcome addition to a party trapped in the minority for the last few years of his broken political career. It's a shame that he wasn't retired in last November's election, but we should all be grateful to Ned Lamont for exposing what Lieberman really is.

Hello World

Making Light notes that today is the centennial of the birth of W.H. Auden, which is as good a reason as any to start up a blog. Voila!
